How to Create a Season Neutral “Mom Style”, Inspired by Meghan Markle

We love Meghan Markle’s down to earth style with that occasional flair for funky or bohemian pieces. Besides loving her style, we also respect it because she so intentionally chooses to work with local and sustainable fashion brands. We’d love to be on one of Meghan’s favorite sustainable brand lists. She often finishes her outfits with brown leather accessories, hello, she needs Urban Southern in her life!

Now that Meghan is a mom, we feel like we can relate to her even more than before. Once you’re a mom, you have less time to come up with outfits to wear, yet you still want to look put together. We came up with five easy ways that you can build a wardrobe for a classic mom-style that will work season after season, inspired by our favorite American princess.

1. Build classic outfits by using solid colors.

You can build any outfit in a hurry with a handful of solid-colored pieces. Solid colors were the bane of my existence as a young Amish-Mennonite girl, but now I’ve embraced them. The Duchess wears a lot of solid colors that are navy, olive, white, or black. Having good, solid-colored clothing pieces will give you a foundation of wardrobe basics that you can wear for years and years.

2. Wear lots of denim, like our favorite American princess.

Denim is a classic choice for the Duchess, which is an all-American style choice. She probably wears more jeans than any other princess ever has and it doesn’t stop there — she even wore a dark denim dress on an occasion.

With a pair of quality jeggings or well-fitted high waisted jeans, your whole outfit can go from looking thoughtless or frumpy to thoughtful and classy. Click To Tweet

3. If stripes are Meghan Markle’s best friend, then they will be your best friend too.

So many of Meghan Markle’s outfits are built with stripes. Stripes are a classic staple for any woman’s personal style and can be worn in so many different ways. Every time I research fashion trends, I can’t find a time when stripes haven’t been in style.

It can take some trial and error to find the best stripes that work for you, but stripes can complement any body type. There’s just something about stripes that refresh an outfit. Stripes are also the best print to mix other prints or colors with because they are such a versatile pattern.

4. Have several dresses that you can wear on a day to day basis.

Growing up as an Amish-Mennonite girl, I wore dresses every day. As an adult, I rarely wear a dress or a skirt unless I’m going to a nice event.

As a Duchess, Meghan wears a lot of elegant dresses to a lot of nice events. But she also wears simple, practical dresses in everyday scenarios. Meghan also uses dresses to completely mix up her style with the occasional wild card. Most of her dress choices are simple and classic, but when she decides to wear prints she goes for some eclectic and bold choices.

5. Select classically cut pieces with a tailored fit.

Perhaps this should have been the first point because the cut and fit of an outfit is what gives it a definitive style. Take a classic button up shirt as an example of a classic cut that is repeated over and over in Meghan Markle’s everyday outfits, whether she’s wearing a button up shirt or a button up shirt dress. She often layers her outfits with a simple blazer or peacoat.

Choose classically cut, tailored pieces for your wardrobe and you’ll look as confident as you feel! Click To Tweet

Bonus Tip: Always have a fresh face with this 5-minute makeup routine

Meghan always wears minimal makeup, making her look youthful with her fresh face. The secret to having a fresh, glowing look to your skin is to begin your makeup routine with a  shimmering face primer, which is a tip that I learned from my friend Heather. After that, apply a light, well-matched foundation, swish across your cheeks with a bronzer, and apply a generous amount of mascara to your lashes to make your eyes pop. This quick makeup routine doesn’t take more than 5 minutes!
